Labkyl and Kompressorteknik have initiated a collaboration focused on offering economically and environmentally sustainable solutions for the food industry through compressor refurbishment. By refurbishing existing compressors instead of purchasing new ones, companies in the food sector can save money while reducing their environmental impact.

Labkyl is an established company in refrigeration technology and has specialized in the use of carbon dioxide (CO2) as a refrigerant. They have been operating since the early 2000s and have become leaders in the field. Labkyl’s CEO, Patrik Larsson, explains that CO2 technology was originally developed to meet the needs of the food industry. Today, CO2 is considered the top choice for refrigeration applications within the industry.

  • The first projects with transcritical CO2 were implemented sometime in 2006. Since then, it has become more or less standard among all major food retail chains. Today, it also applies to food producers. There is a high demand for environmental friendliness, making CO2 compressors a competitive option when building new systems. The cost of such installations is the same or higher than other types of compressors but significantly better for the climate.

Challenges and solutions for the food industry

Refurbishing compressors offers several advantages for the food industry. Firstly, it is economically advantageous. By refurbishing existing compressors instead of buying new ones, companies can save money and keep their costs down. Secondly, it is an environmentally sustainable solution. By avoiding the production of new components, resource consumption is reduced, and waste is minimized.

  • In a growing new production market, it is difficult to obtain spare parts. A while ago, the wait time for spare parts for a CO2 compressor was about two weeks from the factory; today, it can be between ten and fifteen weeks. This is a challenge we and our customers are currently facing.

Through the collaboration with Kompressorteknik, Labkyl can offer its customers quick access to refurbished compressors and spare parts, reducing downtime and ensuring continuous cooling of food products.

The vision for the collaboration moving forward

Patrik Larsson says he looks forward to developing the collaboration with Kompressorteknik and making refurbished compressors a standard solution in the food industry. With many existing facilities soon needing refurbishment to improve energy performance and avoid downtime, there is significant demand for refurbished compressors.

By building a routine together with Kompressorteknik, keeping track of the ages of the machines out there, and creating a systematic approach, we can offer our customers preventative refurbishment of their compressors, providing them with better availability and security.
